Denton as a Destination

Tourism

"Gunn (1994) stated that there is no other form of development “that has so many far-reaching tentacles as does tourism” (p. 16) (from Byrd, pg 6).

"Based on the ideas of sustainability, and stakeholder theory there is a need for these organizations to communicate with the local community as well as the visitor. Educating and informing the local community will strengthen the tourism industry. It will also allow for a stronger understanding of the tourism impacts that the community perceives and the actual impacts that result from tourism" (Byrd, pg. 12).

School Involvement

Participating schools will be eligible for Environmental Award money based on their implementation of activities as described in the School Resource guide.

SCHOOL RESOURCE GUIDE

Freeman (1984) states that an organization can be characterized by its relationships with the organization’s stakeholders. Feeeman (1984) defined a stakeholder as “any group or individual who can affect or is affected by the achievement of the organizations objectives” (p 46) (from Byrd, pg. 7).

Schools can be considered stakeholders as they are controlled by public party's decisions. They involve the teachers who care about learning, students who are influenced by their surroundings and parents who support the cause of learning and a community.

Local Produce

The City partners with the Denton Community Market to support local businesses and promote increased access to local food for residents. The City offers regular classes to support residents in growing their own food.

Again, the city offers several programs in which citizens are encouraged to participate to help reduce pollutants to our environment and help make Denton a healthy place to work, learn, live, and play.

Recycling

"Denton residents and businesses divert approximately 29,000 tons/year from the landfill"

Seeing a simple statistic as this can be mind blowing. Denton is just one city in the large area of the Ft Worth/Dallas Metroplex. Along with every other landfill in the state, this number adds up fast. Households can easily learn what is recyclable and what is not. The simple steps of separating trash can be a large part of sustainability.

NATURE

Clear Creek Natural Heritage Center

The CCNHC serves as a gateway to the approximately 2900 acres comprised of rare bottomland habitat, surprisingly diverse flora and fauna, all surrounding the confluence of Clear Creek and the Elm Fork of the Trinity River.

Effective land management can help reduce the loss of open space, improve resource and transportation efficiency, and improve air and water quality. www.DentonPlan2030
The above plan shows far into the future of the planning Denton has already done as a city. Even though this plan was put together over 10 years ago, the DMO and stakeholders continue to revise it as they find out more and do more pertinent research.

The link above shows the Greenbelt map with a simple directory. This path gives anyone the option to enjoy nature and get some exercise. This may seem like an easy or simple thing to offer, but it takes true commitment and imagination to keep the natural beauty of a growing city alive.

Energy Efficiency

Saving Energy at your Home or Business:

The City of Denton offers free professional Energy Audits, to help residents target energy saving measures.  Additionally, the City offers Energy Efficiency Rebates to help offset the costs of many energy efficiency improvements. Solar electric (photovoltaic) systems also qualify for rebates. DME also offers a 100% Renewable Energy electricity rate (GreenSense Renewable rate). Information on tax incentives for efficiency and renewable Energy upgrades can also be found on the DME website.

The links above offer information and support for residents to keep track of their own energy use. These options also show the stakeholders how the DMO is involved in the community and can see the future plans of Denton.

The City and its community-owned power company, Denton Municipal Electric (DME), are committed to efficient use of energy resources. The City promotes efficiency, conservation, and investment in renewable energy.

"Based on the definitions that are used for sustainability and sustainable tourism development four distinct groups are identified; the present visitors, future visitors, present host community, and future host community" (Byrd, pg. 10). Since all of these groups are involved, communicating the sustainability practices is very important. The more people supporting this cause, the better a destination can become.

Air Quality

By working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the City can achieve multiple benefits, including saving energy and money, strengthening the local economy, improving local air quality, and preserving quality of life in our community.

Since 2006, the City has increased use of alternative fuels in its fleet from approximately 5% to approximately 35%.

Air quality goes hand and hand with transporation. Creating multiple ways to get around a city, gives the residents the choice of how they use transporation based of their travel destination and their beliefs of sustainability. Promoting cheap and easier ways than cars (i.e. trams, scooters, bikes, etc.) is a good way to make them aware and be involved.
